Therapists for college students near Boulder, CO
Are you an overthinker? Do your emotions interfere with your relationships? Our human brains are fascinating in what they allow us to accomplish, but sometimes they can be our own worst enemy! Sometimes overwhelming emotions and unhelpful thoughts interfere with our lives and cause significant distress. I created my practice to help people "be okay when things are not okay." This is done using a person-centered dialectical-behavior therapy (DBT) approach to help you gain insight into yourself while providing you with the tools and encouragement to thrive instead of just survive. I want you to leave each session feeling validated and more confident in your ability to cope with life on life's terms! I also specialize in treating complex PTSD and am trained in EMDR.
Tired of traditional therapy that doesn't quite fit? My approach is different. I integrate the power of Internal Family Systems (IFS), the wisdom of Stoicism, and the beauty of Kintsugi to create a truly unique and transformative therapeutic experience. This isn't just about fixing problems; it's about building a stronger, more resilient, and more authentic you. Let's explore how this innovative approach can help you thrive. Spring EOP is here for any step of recovery, whether or not you have been to treatment. We aim to bridge the gap between leaving treatment and the transition back to life. For individuals who need to work, attend school, and have ongoing family obligations, the limited time outpatient therapy provides may not be enough to sufficiently support the investment that’s been made in residential treatment with the continued journey of sobriety. Many clients who have experienced residential treatment find that there is a greater need for clinical support beyond one session weekly; at Spring EOP we are here to support this transition with continued, consistent care. Additionally, we understand not everyone is ready for treatment, a client does not have to be transitioning out of a higher level of care to be an ideal client for us. We are there for every step of the recovery. We offer support to loved ones through CRAFT group as well as therapy for couples, family, and loved ones. We accept ages 15 and up.

“Rarely, if ever, are any of us healed in isolation. Healing is an act of communion.” – bell hooks The healing journey can be an intimidating path, and you don’t have to travel it alone. I believe that the role of a therapist is to walk beside you on your healing path. My top priority is to create a safe, accepting space where you can explore your inner landscape and develop skills to navigate your outer world. I am a trauma-informed, intersectional feminist who cares deeply about helping clients reclaim their power and reconnect to their voice. In my person-centered, strengths-based therapeutic environment, I integrate EMDR, expressive writing and arts exercises, trauma-informed mindfulness techniques, and talk therapy to help you reconnect to yourself and your self-worth. (EMDR, briefly, is a well-researched therapeutic process which can support clients in processing trauma and building inner resources.) If you’ve landed here you are probably seeking connection, and hope to find the right professional to support you. Something has gotten in the way, or you’ve lost your way to a life that is rich and meaningful. It may be about fractured relationship, debilitating emotional struggles, over-reliance on a substance, the grip of social media, the persistence of trauma, or elusive life balance. Or you may wish to deepen progress you’ve already made in making a life worth living. I offer the wisdom and skills that come from over 30 years working in mental health. My 20+ years as a licensed therapist have included direct work with people of all ages and in all combinations, often as I also served in leadership positions in residential programs. My primary approach is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), including ACT for Trauma. Depending on what is useful, I weave elements of Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Internal Family Systems, and Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction. The work I do is informed by Buddhist Psychology, and often includes guidance in the use of specific meditation techniques to bring clarity and growth. My own life has been enriched by my experience as a person in long-term recovery, my dedicated mindfulness/meditation practice, and my immersion in the outdoors wherever my travels take me.

I'm an LGBTQIA+, anxiety, and trauma therapist, working with students across Colorado. Do you feel weighed down by anxiety, trauma, identity struggles, or the lasting impact of religious harm? Many of my clients are LGBTQIA+ adults or survivors of religious trauma who carry exhaustion, dread, and fear from living in systems that questioned, silenced, or shamed who they are. Clients also come to me with anxiety, which often shows up as hypervigilance, burnout, or the ache of feeling like you're not enough. You may long for healing and the freedom to be fully yourself. You are not alone, healing is possible, and your story matters. I provide affirming, trauma-informed therapy rooted in narrative, somatic, and liberation-focused practices. Together we’ll untangle harmful messages that have shaped you, teach your body to feel safe, calm your nervous system, and re-author the stories holding you back. You'll reclaim your identity while moving toward a more authentic and empowered life. As a queer-affirming, feminist, and anti-oppressive therapist, I offer care that is tender, respectful, and at the right pace for you. Whether you’re healing from trauma, recovering from a harmful spiritual background, or seeking growth beyond anxiety or hard life transitions, I'll walk with you in it. Often the people who find me are high achieving and highly anxious folx who use fantasy as a way to connect. I'm amazed at how much my clients talk about D&D and love how much joy and opportunity it offers. Many of my clients identify in the LGBTQ+ community as well.
You’re not broken...you’re overwhelmed. If you’re a college student, grad student, or campus professional who looks like they’re “doing fine” but feels anything but fine on the inside, you’re not alone. Many of the people I work with say things like: “My brain never shuts off.” “I overthink everything I say or do.” “I’m exhausted, but slowing down feels scary.” “I keep it together for everyone else, but I’m unraveling inside.” “I don’t know how to rest without guilt.” On the outside, you’re capable, responsible, and high-functioning. On the inside, it feels like you’re carrying a constant mental and emotional load, and you’re tired of holding it all alone. I work with students and campus professionals who are: •burnt out and emotionally overloaded •stuck in anxiety, overthinking, or shame spirals •sensitive to feedback, conflict, or perceived disappointment •struggling with ADHD-style busy brains or emotional regulation •quietly afraid they’re “too much” or “not enough” You don’t need another productivity system, mindset hack, or pressure to “get it together.” You need a space where: •you don’t have to perform •your nervous system can slow down •your thoughts don’t run the show •you can untangle what actually matters to you How we’ll work together My approach is warm, collaborative, and grounded in Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) -a skills-based, evidence-supported approach that helps you: •get out of mental spirals without trying to force your thoughts away •respond more flexibly to stress, emotions, and uncertainty •build self-trust instead of self-criticism •create steadiness without losing your drive or ambition This isn’t about fixing you. It’s about learning how to be with yourself differently with more clarity, compassion, and choice. Support that fits campus life •Online therapy — flexible and accessible around classes, teaching, and work schedules •Walk & Talk sessions — for clients who think better with movement and nature •Small supportive groups — connection without pressure or emotional labor •Between-session tools — gentle prompts and supports so therapy doesn’t live only in the session If you’re wondering… •“Is therapy going to be too intense?” •“What if I don’t even know what I need?” •“What if I’m not ‘bad enough’ for therapy?” Those questions make sense — and you don’t need to answer them before reaching out. I offer complimentary consultations so you can get a feel for the process without pressure or obligation. You don’t have to know exactly what you want yet. We’ll start where you are — and move at a pace that actually works for you. 👉 Schedule a free consultation at www.thereddoortherapy.org ⸻ Emily MacNiven CO Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) LPC.0019496 Founder of The Red Door Therapy & Wellness Solutions Online therapy for adults across Colorado 🔗 www.thereddoortherapy.org
