No matter what brought you here, you deserve to feel better and live the life you want. I specialize in working with young adults, therapists, LGBTQ+ folks, and perfectionists/high achievers. I'm also trained in EMDR for processing trauma. I teach coping skills to calm the brain and body in order to manage emotions. You'll learn to reframe negative self-talk, manage stress, reduce perfectionism, & improve self-esteem. We can explore past trauma & how it impacts you currently. I also empower folks to set boundaries and prioritize self-care. We'll work on breaking patterns, assertive communication, and forming healthy habits. My style is authentic, compassionate, and nonjudgmental. I use a customized approach to create a style of therapy that best suits your goals. No two people are alike, and my approach to each person is just as unique. I'm pretty direct (while still being empathetic), and I encourage you to be direct with me too. Therapy isn't always serious or difficult - it can actually be a positive and uplifting part of your week. Whenever possible, I try to balance the difficult moments with lightness and hope. Check out my website for more info, or call/email if you'd like to work with me!

My first priority is that you feel SAFE in this space. We won't dive into the deep end on day one. Instead, we’ll go at your pace, focusing on building a space where you feel safe enough to exhale first. My goal isn’t to 'fix' you (because I don't believe that you are broken), but to partner with you in figuring out what’s getting in the way of the life you want. I specialize in working with people who are skeptical of the therapy process, nervous about opening up, or people who haven't had the best experiences in the past with treatment and maybe think therapy isn't for them. Additionally, most of my clients come to me with issues related to trauma, grief, anxiety, depression and addiction. Kix is a therapy dog who joins me at work every day too and would be happy to join you in session! But don't worry - he can also take a nap during your session if you prefer.
As a therapist rooted in a client-centered approach, I am committed to providing you with empathy, compassion, and a peaceful, supportive environment where you can safely explore your past traumas, and manage stress, anxiety, depression, and more. Together, we will work collaboratively to uncover and address underlying trauma, develop effective coping strategies, and build self-awareness. I have experience working with individuals facing a variety of mental health and substance use disorders. In our sessions, I draw upon evidence-based practices such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, and Motivational Interviewing, while also being able to integrate faith into our work if it aligns with your values. Healing and growth are not destinations but ongoing processes of discovery, transformation, and becoming. My role as your therapist is to walk alongside you on this lifelong journey, fostering holistic change and resilience every step of the way.

We’ll talk through all of that openly and make decisions that feel right for you. My approach is collaborative, down-to-earth, and focused on the whole picture. My name is Elizabeth Askren, but most people that know me call me Beth. I'm a licensed mental health counselor, and I see clients in a private practice setting. My practice is Core Counseling & Wellness. I am trained and licensed as a mental health counselor, and I feel especially passionate about working with adults who struggle with anxiety, codependency, perfectionism, and those who have been called “overachievers”. I work with people to recover from emotional abuse, trauma, and neglect from both developmental or adult relationships, amd who struggle with self-worth and self-doubt, to those seeking to overcome developmental trauma, and who find themselves struggling with adult insecure attachment and toxic relationship patterns. Clients work with me to explore and heal the issues at the core of these struggles, and learn to regulate and process emotions and tolerate distress that can often make day to day life feel unbearable at times. Developing boundaries and finding validation and security from within are a part of this process. Along the way, I help clients identify and replace behaviors that are no longer serving them and are problematic in their current life. I assist clients in developIng new skills allowing them to shift towards living authentically, finding fulfillment, finding themselves, and ultimately finding joy. I see clients come out the other side with greater self-worth, grounded by confidence in themselves, discovering new opportunities while creating a fulfilling life in which they can thrive. Good therapy starts with genuine compassion and acceptance. These are core values of both my practice & my life. I love being a therapist. Genuinely, I really really love it. The work I do with clients is inspired by the deep work I've done myself. I show up to every session with an understanding of how it can feel to sit in my client's chair. If invited, I'd be honored to discuss working together. Contact me if you would like to setup time for a phone chat to explore this. I primarily work with clients in-person in my Broad Ripple office, but can take advantage of virtual appointments when clinically appropriate and necessary. Payment for services is due at the time of service. I am not “in-network” with any insurance plans, and am considered an “out-of-network” provider (or self-pay). While I am happy to offer some information and guidance to clients who have insurance plans that include out-of-network benefits, I do not bill insurance or submit claims, and can not guarantee reimbursement or coverage for services. Please contact your plan to identify if your plan includes out-of-network coverage, and if so what the reimbursement and limitations to coverage may be. I accept HSA & FSA payments, credit cards, checks, or cash.

I have been working with adolescents and young adults for 12 years. I focus on each person's individual strengths to overcome emotional, behavioral, and life challenges. I believe the therapeutic process is most successful when it is founded on a trusting, authentic, and collaborative relationship, where my clients feel comfortable expressing their thoughts and feelings in a safe and nonjudgmental environment. I utilize cognitive behavioral therapy, along with a range of other therapeutic techniques to individualize the therapy process for each client. My clinical expertise includes working with clients experiencing Anxiety, Depression, ADHD, oppositional behaviors, grief, and difficulty with major life changes or stressors (especially college transitions).
My approach to therapy comes from a space of empathy, compassion, and absolutely zero judgement. My goal for every individual is to help them experience a positive change. I utilize a strengths based approach to encourage my clients to tap into their own strengths and resources while also meeting them where they are at in their personal therapeutic journey. I became interested in therapy due to my own personal struggles with addiction and with 11 years of sobriety, I hope to help others. My goal is for my clients to get something out of the work we do together and for it to be worthwhile and beneficial for them. I work alongside my clients to help them reach their goals while appreciating and celebrating their strengths. I have a laid back approach which includes colorful language, an odd sense of humor, and finding a balance to push you outside of your comfort zone to accomplish your goals. I hope to create a safe space for my clients to be themselves and for me to help them process life's tough challenges and celebrate the victories.
